Acoustic characterization of a neonate skull using a clinical MR-guided high intensity focused ultrasound system for pediatric neurological disorder treatment planning

چکیده
Background/introduction Transcranial MR-guided Focused Ultrasound (TcMRgFUS) treatments are now clinically performed on adult patients for brain tumor or essential tremor therapies. However, no application has been proposed for children despite their thinner skull being less of an acoustic barrier and the presence of a fontanelle on neonates, which could constitute a natural acoustic window for the transmission of ultrasound waves. As there is minimal literature data on the attenuation and speed-of-sound of the skull in neonatal patients, the aim of this study was to perform the acoustic characterization of a neonate skull.

MR-guided adaptive focusing of therapeutic ultrasound beams in the human head.
PURPOSE This study aims to demonstrate, using human cadavers the feasibility of energy-based adaptive focusing of ultrasonic waves using magnetic resonance acoustic radiation force imaging (MR-ARFI) in the framework of non-invasive transcranial high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy. METHODS Energy-based adaptive focusing techniques were recently proposed in order to achieve aberrat...
متن کاملTreatment planning and patient positioning for MR-guided high intensity focused ultrasound treatment: a systematic approach
Background/introduction Treatment duration as well as time spent on patient positioning imposes limitations on therapeutic use of MRguided High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (MR-HIFU). Reduction of overall treatment time is especially important in potential pediatric applications and in other cases where general anesthesia must be used, due to the risks associated with prolonged anesthesia. Typi...
متن کاملA Numerical Investigation of the Time Reversal Mirror Technique for Trans-skull Brain Cancer Ultrasound Surgery
Introduction: The medical applications of ultrasound on human brain are highly limited by the phase and amplitude aberrations induced by the heterogeneities of the skull. However, it has been shown that time reversing coupled with amplitude compensation can overcome these aberrations. In this work, a model for 2D simulation of the time reversal mirror technique is proposed to study the possibil...
متن کاملExAblate neuro transcranial treatment considerations
Background/introduction ExAblate Neuro is the only technology that enables clinical treatment of transcranial MR guided focused ultrasound. It is CE approved for the treatment of certain neurological disorders and is under evaluation for additional regulatory approval. We will review the existing applications and the limitations of the current technology. Two of the key limitations are the trea...
متن کاملHigh-intensity focused ultrasound for noninvasive functional neurosurgery.
Transcranial magnetic resonance (MR)-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (tcMRgHIFU) implies a novel, noninvasive treatment strategy for various brain diseases. Nine patients with chronic neuropathic pain were treated with selective medial thalamotomies. Precisely located thermal ablations of 4mm in diameter were produced at peak temperatures of 51 degrees C to 60 degrees C under continuou...
